Which Surgery is best for me in my case a Scar Revision or Hair Transplant (FUE)?
I got into a car accident and had injury to my head which resulted in leaving a semi big scar and no hair grows in that scar. So I wanted to know which option was best for me either a scar revision or a hair transplant?
Alex, the correct option for your scar camouflage procedure will likely be determined by the size, shape and location of the scar. If the scar is particularly large, reducing it’s size with a scar revision prior to transplantation might be a good idea. Since hair will not grow in the scar on it’s own, the scar will likely need some degree of transplantation in order to camouflage it well.
In my hair transplant practice (Bauman Medical Group) I use a particularly special technique of NeoGraft/FUE transplantation when I’m working into a scar which involves transplanting some ‘good’ skin along with the hair follicle. This patient had a particularly long and thin scar http://www.flickr.com/photos/alanbauman/375843853/ which you can see here after a single session of FUE. It’s better, but not 100% perfectly back to normal. Which leads me to my next point… You might need more than one session of FUE to camouflage the scar–especially if you wear your hair short, like this gentleman.
Here’s another view from a frontal 3/4 angle http://www.flickr.com/photos/alanbauman/4050495714/ .
This technique (NeoGraft FUE) can also be used to hide old linear hair transplant scars.
If you can submit a picture of your scar, it will be easier for an evaluating surgeon (like me) to make a recommendation.
Personally, I have performed some of these trauma/accident cases ‘pro-bono’ (free) through the ISHRS.org “Operation Restore Pro-Bono Program.” Let me know if you’d like more info on that and good luck!
